For Remy's Birthday

Wow!  Can  you believe it?

Remy is turning seven at the end of April!

 This year, I hope to make him a birthday party theme with Cookie Monster incorporating it into his GAPS diet. I hope that by that day we will be into the FULL GAPS so that I could make him a cake and some cookies. Of course the ingredients will consistently of seeds, allowed fats, nuts and dried fruit or honey.

To be honest, Remy does not play with many toys. The things he enjoys are good food, fish oil, having fun with someone loving one-on-one and his IPad.  

Every year, we receive very thoughtful wishes and gifts for Remy, so this year we welcome financial gifts that will go toward his ongoing therapies. We appreciate all your kindness and generosity!

Consultations and Therapies

Osteopathy - $120/hour - At time of writing this blog post, our first appointment is booked for April 17th.  This initial appointment will be for 1.5 hours and will cost $170.  Once we have the initial assessment, we should be able to find out how often treatment is recommended.  I will update once we find out.

Connecting with Autism consultations - $120 to $150 per 50 minute session
Connecting with Autism GPS (to help Remy's homeschooling success) - $280
Connecting with Autism online training course - $150 for the month of April or $265

A juicer $380.00 would be helpful in getting him the juices he needs for detoxifying as part of the GAPS diet. 

This year Remy has his own bank account, so all birthday cheques can be written in his name:  Remy Laurin. If there are therapies that you would like to personally fund, please let us know.

Celebrating Remy's Birthday in 2011

Every year since his diagnosis, I've been making Remy a raw vegan cake for this birthday. Every time that we've had a raw cake, he's pushed it away. Last year his sister forced him to eat some of his. This year, I decided at the last minute that it would okay for him to receive a conventional cake: a cake made with sugar, wheat, oil and eggs. It possibly also contained artificial vanilla (I didn't even think about that until now!). In any case, I was very grateful to his Auntie Dee for making it.

The words were made from perfectly cut and arranged dried cranberries.  The "5th" and the stems of the flower were made from watercress stems :)  The clementine segments balance off the colours nicely on my raw cashew cream icing.

DH had the great idea of surprising the little guy by rolling a new bike out right after we would sing "Happy Birthday".  It's always a good idea to see if we could ellicit emotions from the guy :)

Well, it turned out that the little guy was so unwell that he ended up putting himself to bed before supper was ready.  When it came time to eat, everyone ate except him.  He was tucked under his covers shaking to generate a fever.  I made sure that no one would force him to stay up to eat if he felt that he had to lie down.  I'm glad that he was able to rest.

Although, Remy was in bed, the nicely decorated cake was waiting for mouths to bite into it.  I had not had a conventional cake for (I don't even recall how long), but I certainly wanted a piece.  After a bit of thought and hesitation, my sister and I decided to cut the cake in half via a co-operational cake surgery technique.  Since we still wanted to take a picture of Remy eating or looking at his cake, we decided to keep the top part intact  while splitting the bottom half amongst us.  Even DH ate piece!

The next day, Remy was running around and babbling by 6:30 AM.  In the afternoon. we finally decided that we should sing him "Happy Birthday", present him with the cake with the nearly dried up cashew cream icing, and also roll out the bike.

He didn't seem to impressed at first, but as we all put in the enthusiam and excitement, the guy started to show signs of glee.  Just look at the photos:

Remy's Birthday wishlist for 2011

I've been receiving requests for a list of possible presents Remy would like for his birthday this year.  First of all, thank you so much for remember the big little guy's special day!  Your love and thoughtfulness mean much more than any physical presents.

Wishlist:

1.  a new bicycle (he has outgrown this bike from last year with the training wheels)
2.  a sturdy wooden wagon (like the classic Radio Flyer) in which he and his sister can both sit without their feet crammed

For the first two items, it might just be easier to make a contribution toward it since it's difficult to know what size bike to buy without the kids there - and we might have to just get the materials to build a wagon that's sturdy.  As for items 3 and 4, duplicate sets are welcome - they tends to break things easily.
